Screening of Student-Athletes
This project is investigating the role of cardiovascular testing in screening athletes for rare disorders that may put them at risk for sudden cardiac death. Current recommendations for preparticipation screening in the United States advocate a detailed cardiovascular history and physical exam; while in Europe recent consensus recommendations have added the 12-lead EKG for all competitive athletes. We have several lines of investigation ongoing, involving collaborations with investigators at the Human Performance Laboratory, the Center for Health Policy/Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research, the Stanford Prevention Research Center, and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. Among current research questions are modeling cost effectiveness of several screening strategies, applying new technologies to screening, and the potential for high throughput screening at local high schools and colleges.
